Consumer Reports just came out with their latest rankings of auto companies. At the top were the usual suspects: Honda and Subaru. At the bottom is the company who brought us one of the better Super Bowl ads in years:
It sort of confirms some of the assumptions made here about the leap of faith necessary to go from great ad to actual purchase.
On the other hand, if you don't have to worry about poor rankings can you get away with making bad commercials? I don't think so, although I think Subaru has gotten away with making plenty of "meh" ads lately:
