Images in this gallery are all part of my book “Savatieri A Year With a Tree” available here
I started regularly photographing in Elizabeth Park with the rise of Covid in late March 2020. At the time, Covid and working from home meant abandoning nascent projects that required travel and contact with people. Instead I started frequenting the park more regularly, first on weekends and then eventually on an almost daily basis.
On one of my earliest visits in March of 2020 I came across this one singular tree. A “Savatieri Mono Maple” I later learned, native to Southeast Asia. I was struck immediately by its form, muscular shape andintricate root structure. The tree became a regular stopping point for me as I entered and left the park. Visiting the tree over an entire year gave me an opportunity to do something I have rarely had a chance to do: Simply observe, watch and learn; about time, shape, form and patience.
