The Covid pandemic has significantly changed the nature of work, especially the need for human physical presence, robbing cities of the daily ebb and flow of workers and depopulating the urban landscape. These images are part of an ongoing project examining the downtown area of Hartford, Connecticut, a base for insurance and financial services companies with a large commuter population and its workday population has been greatly affected.
In this project I am examining how individuals fit in this new landscape during this evolving time. How do people relate to space and community amidst half-empty office buildings and depopulated corporate outdoor spaces? How do commuter and non-commuter populations encounter this new environment? How are behaviors changing or remaining the same and what signals can we discern where new emergent behaviors and connections occur?
