This body of work began in mid-2020. Working on a hybrid schedule in downtown Hartford, I began to take long walks with my camera. Some when I arrived early on the bus, some during lunch hour and some as a break between meetings and Zoom calls. As the walks continued, I began to realize the impact that Covid and the new workday world they created changed a city and a downtown already under stress.

In particular, I became drawn to two distinct landscapes that make up the downtown Hartford environment. Constitution Plaza, an urban mall built above the streets that connects many of the large office buildings in the area, and Main Street below, where many downtown workers and commuters mingle as they arrive for work, transfer for buses to jobs in suburban warehouses or begin the commute home.

In this work I’m investigating how Covid and its after effects have altered these humanscapes. How have they become more distinct and where are they blending together in new and more interesting ways. How do individuals fit in this new landscape and do they relate to space, community and each other amidst half-empty office buildings and depopulated corporate outdoor spaces?
